Planning task

Production scheduling that keeps due dates.

Production scheduling decides which order runs when on which machine, and who operates it. Optimized means: due dates are kept, set-up times and colour changes go down, and maintenance and energy prices flow into the same plan.

Rules in the model

What the plan keeps, without anyone checking by hand.

Due datesCustomer dates, lead time for assembly, priorities and rush orders.
Set-upsSet-up times, colour and material changes, sequences that fit together.
MachinesRouting, capacities, alternatives and transport between stations.
StaffShifts and skills of the operators.
Maintenance and energyMaintenance windows, breakdowns, power prices and peak loads.

From practice

One project, as it actually went.

Project example

Detailed scheduling in chemical production

Allnex: market leader in industrial coating resins, 34 production sites worldwide

Task
Reactor utilisation, set-up and cleaning times and changing delivery times in one plan.
Result
Automated, adjustable detailed scheduling with a plan board based on Timefold, built into the existing SAP processes.
In daily use
The new planning process is faster and simpler, and the users have adopted it.

Use cases

Seeing is believing.

Every case plays in your browser: the plan in time-lapse, with KPIs and the comparison to the usual way of planning.

Production scheduling: Production scheduling · machining09:20

Production scheduling · machining

CNC mills, lathes, welding and assembly; component orders feed assembly, AGVs move the material, workers in shifts.

Production and maintenance

Production scheduling: Production scheduling · sheet metal10:00

Production scheduling · sheet metal

Laser cutting, bending, robot welding and a powder coating line that runs in colour batches.

Production and maintenance

Production scheduling: Rail depot · night maintenance04:00

Rail depot · night maintenance

Wash plant, inspection pits, drop pit and wheel lathe; one shunting crew moves the trains through the switch ladder.

Production and maintenance

Production scheduling: Energy-aware production · foundry11:00

Energy-aware production · foundry

Induction furnaces, heat treatment, e-trucks, PV and a battery planned together against day-ahead prices and the 15-minute peak.

Production and maintenanceEnergy and charging

Production scheduling: Wind farm · maintenance in weather windowsWeeks

Wind farm · maintenance in weather windows

28 real turbines, three crews, one mobile crane and a weather front. Services run in calm hours, faults are fixed quickly.

Production and maintenance

Production scheduling: AI compute scheduling · 5 data centresWeeks

AI compute scheduling · 5 data centres

A simulated day with 863 AI jobs on 9,728 GPUs in five data centres. The OptaZEN meta-scheduler plans 24 hours ahead in front of the existing scheduler: which job runs when and where, when data moves and when renting extra GPUs pays off.

Production and maintenance

Production scheduling: Additive manufacturing · medical technologyWeeks

Additive manufacturing · medical technology

Nine printers for titanium, cobalt chrome, steel, PA12 and resin, 20 post-processing stations, two shifts. Which lot goes on which build plate and printer, and in which order, so surgery dates hold, also after a failed build.

Production and maintenance

Route planning: Industrial bakery · night production01:45

Industrial bakery · night production

About 120 dough batches, seven kneaders, four make-up lines, eleven ovens and 15 tours that leave between 01:45 and 05:30. Dough cannot wait, so the order of the doughs decides the night.

Routing and field serviceProduction and maintenance

Production scheduling: Plant maintenance · two weeks of work ordersWeeks

Plant maintenance · two weeks of work orders

82 work orders for two weeks, nine own technicians and four external companies. Maintenance uses the gaps of the production plan, and the bottlenecks stop as little as possible.

Production and maintenance

Production scheduling: Assembly line · mixed-model sequencing05:00

Assembly line · mixed-model sequencing

400 utility vehicles in many variants, 32 stations at a takt of 72 seconds, a paint shop that wants long colour blocks and suppliers who deliver just in sequence.

Production and maintenance

Production scheduling: Aircraft maintenance · hangar planning06:00

Aircraft maintenance · hangar planning

Four bays, two aircraft in a heavy check and three overnight checks every night. Every aircraft has to be released before its next flight.

Approach

From the first call to value in operation.

  1. Stage 1Clarify

    1. UnderstandGoals, terms, rules, data, bottlenecksEntry: Planning Snapshot, Assessment or Strategy
    2. AssessPotential, business case, feasibility, risks

    DecisionIs it worth it?

  2. Stage 2Build

    1. DesignPlanning model, rules, data, interfacesEntry: training or model review
    2. PilotReal scenarios, value proven before much is invested
    3. Roll outIntegration, training, go-live

DecisionDoes the pilot deliver what it promised?

  3. Stage 3Run

    1. StabiliseAccompany the first real planning rounds, sharpen the rulesEntry: support after go-live
    2. ImproveWatch the KPIs, take in new requirements

CycleWhen operations change, we adapt the rules and the plan.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does this replace our ERP or MES?

No. Orders come from your ERP or MES, and the optimized plan goes back there.

What about rush orders?

A rush order is planned in, and the plan shows which other orders move because of it.

Can the plan really reduce set-up time?

We check that in the first call and in a pilot with your data. The use cases show how the model groups orders with similar set-ups.

The first step

Where does your planning lose time, capacity or money?

In a free first call we work out which next step is really worth it.
